Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Also known as botulinum rejuvenation, Botox is a cosmetic procedure primarily used to lessen the appearance of frown lines and crow’s feet. It’s also used to treat excessive sweating.

Botox is injected into the muscle in the areas you want treated. For example, the muscle in between your eyebrows. The injection causes the muscle to relax, which helps lessen the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

It doesn’t freeze the muscle, so you’ll continue to have feeling in the injection areas.

Are there different types of Botox?

There are a number of different brands of Botox. Louis Acosta, MD uses Dysport® and XEOMIN®. Both are used to treat moderate to severe lines and wrinkles in the face.

Is Botox safe?

Botox is safe. You may be concerned about safety because you’re injecting a toxin into your body. However, there have been no adverse reactions in any of the millions of people treated with Botox by a trained professional.

As a doctor with many years of experience, Dr. Acosta is well-versed in the methods of Botox injections.

Does Botox leave you expressionless?

Many patients worry that Botox will cause them to look plastic or expressionless. But when treated by a trained professional like Dr. Acosta who knows exactly where to place the injection, there’s no need to worry. The effects are natural, and you’ll continue to be able to use your natural facial expressions to make your feelings known.

What happens after Botox?

You may experience some bruising around the injection site, but there’s no need to stop doing your usual activities after a treatment session.

However, Dr. Acosta may recommend you refrain from strenuous activities that cause sweating for at least two hours following the procedure. It is also recommended not to lie down or put your head down for 3 hours following the procedure.

It may take a few days for the Botox to start to relax the muscles and improve the appearance of your lines. The effects can last for up to four months, and in some cases longer. You can have another Botox treatment as soon as you notice the effects wearing off.
